A human built mars exploration ship 'Genesis' was destoryed by a hostile alien ship. This event issued chaos on earth. Major powers decided to organize a joint defence but there was a huge problem - humanity had no means of lifting heavy warships into space. All they had was ships that could only be described as advanced shuttles. So a decision to develop an atmosphere based defence force was made. And for 15 years humanity had been preparing for the inevitable conflict.
